Quietude is a result of spending time closely listening and observing the bushland environment surrounding my studio. My studio became my sanctuary during the pandemic. There was a prevailing sense of quiet and calm and I wanted to capture that. Connecting with nature and tuning into its subtle healing abilities became a daily ritual.
I moved my practice outside to be closer with the subjects, the beautiful yellow gums dotted on the property. This action saw a more direct response in the mark making and colour choices. There was a ritual to setting up and settling in, allowing space to slip into a mindful, unhindered state while painting. I worked through different seasons, times of day and weather conditions to explore how the quality of light shifted. Each work a moment in quietude.
