How to create artworks with depth, interest and detail with Natalie Martin
Hi, I’m Natalie Martin, an Australian watercolour artist, based on Wadawarrung country (Surf Coast, Victoria).
The fluidity and subtlety of watercolour is only enhanced through working with layers, you can create a beautiful luminosity. This is quite unique to watercolour and one of the main reasons I love this medium so much.
This new intermediate course is my third online course, following on from Welcome to Watercolour and the Magic of Colour Mixing. In it, we’ll dig into basic and more advanced layering techniques, you’ll spend time experimenting with ways to layer pigment, and learn
how to create different effects (as long as you can muster the patience to let things dry properly as you go!) You’ll gain greater insight into my practice, as we explore how to create artworks with greater complexity, detail and interest. We also take time to delve into common errors and equipment care.
This course is the perfect next step once you’ve mastered the basics. Layering work brings watercolour to its greatest potential, and I can’t wait to see how you continue to develop your practice and build confidence in painting with this magical medium.

"I learned so much in this class about layering, negative painting and composition. Natalie is a wonderful instructor explaining concepts and step by step actionable steps. I really appreciated her explanation of her thought process as she painted - insightful. I thoroughly enjoyed her two previous classes and this one raised the bar! Highly recommend this class.”
"This was a wonderful workshop. It is not too intimidating for a relative beginner like myself, but it also shows how some simple techniques can be used to create amazing effects.”
"I thoroughly enjoyed your class! It is well planned and executed and I feel that I learned a lot. I am an intermediate beginner. It is difficult for me to find classes that are not too “beginner” or too advanced and fast moving. This one was excellent for me..."

Can I gift this Course?
We would be delighted for you to gift this course. Due to the way the enrolment process works, please ensure you click on the 'Gift the Bundle' button if you wish to send the bundle as a gift. This will ensure the recipient receives a hard copy of everything they need to enrol in one box.
If gifting the course alone (not the bundle), we recommend you purchase an E-Gift Card that your gift recipient can then redeem for the course. We have $79 and $149 E-Gift Cards available as well as an ability to add a personalised message to your E-Gift card.
What is an E-Book?
Included with your course enrolment on Teachable is a 60 page e-book. This is a downloadable PDF document that has all the course content in it, alongside extra tips, key takeaways and extension projects for each class module. It is a helpful tool so you don't have to constantly pause and rewind the videos if you are happily painting along.
What materials will I need to do the course?
I put an emphasis on the painting over the materials, expensive art materials tend to be a hindrance to the experience. If you have a set of watercolours already, use those! You don’t need to dash out and buy a whole lot of new supplies to match what you see in the course. You’ll also need a brush or two, some watercolour paper, pencil and eraser, a couple of water jars, and some paper towel. I get a bit more specific in the 'What You'll Need' section above. I have two kits available in my online store that provide you with all the materials you need, see more here.
Good lighting helps too, natural light is best if you can manage it, a good workspace as well as a pinch of creative courage! We delve further into materials in the second video of the course covering not only what, but why.
Are your courses suitable for kids?
Yes! My beginners course ‘Welcome to Watercolour’ although not created specifically for kids is young person friendly, I suggest from ages 8 and up. My second and third courses ‘Magic of Colour Mixing’ and 'Lessons in Layering with Watercolour' have a bit more technical content in it, so I would suggest from ages 10 and up. Even better, sit down with your kids and do it together!
What’s the difference between Teachable and Skillshare?
Purchasing the course through Teachable is a once off fee and once enrolled in the course you have unlimited lifetime access. The online course available through nataliemartin.com.au are through Teachable. Skillshare on the other hand is a subscription based model. To access the courses available you’ll need to maintain a monthly subscription service to Skillshare. Once you cancel your subscription you will no longer be able to access the course. Access to the course via Skillshare does nt include the 60 page Course E-Book
