In April 2025 I posted my first educational style YouTube video, 'Seven Colours, Endless Possibilities'. I had so many students asking about which colours to start off with when it comes to investing in professional quality paints. I knew my recommended palette was a little different to what others suggest so I thought why no throw it out there?
This video was received so well and I had so many interesting and varied comments and conversations after I hit publish. I was so encouraged I wanted to make a whole series on mixing, colour choices, testing and all these fabulous things you can do with watercolour. Then I broke my ankle, like, really badly. Hospital for 12 days, a moonboot for 5 months and crutches for 11 months. Blargh. It really stifled my ability to live comfortably, let alone film YouTube videos.
12 months down the track, my ankle still isn't perfect BUT I am able to film again. So say hello to 'Can you mix RED without red paint?' the second video in my series all about exploring colours primarily through mixing.
I chose red as the colour to feature as it was the most commented upon mix from the original video. So many were unaware you can mix red. So I thought this was the perfect launch pad into the next video.
I show you, using my 7 Essential Colours, how to mix bright reds, earthy reds and shades as well as beautiful, delicate tints - perfect for skin tones and blushy coloured blossoms.
If colour and colour mixing is something that really interests you, I highly recommend my online course, The Magic of Colour Mixing where we deep dive into all things colour. You'll become a colour whizz and feel so confident when mixing and bringing colours together. We go through the practical steps, understand the 'why', as well as apply our newfound knowledge into botanically inspired watercolour artworks.
That's enough from me, enjoy the video! I would love to hear what you think - your comments, questions and feedback mean more than you realise.
What colour would you like to see next? I'm thinking green!
